The CMO job description in 2026, with duties, scope, reporting lines and a template

A chief marketing officer job description: duties, scope, reporting line to the CEO, budget authority, first-year measures and a template to copy.

A chief marketing officer (CMO) job description defines the executive who runs marketing for the whole company. This person answers to the chief executive officer (CEO) and board for growth through strategy, forecasting, the marketing budget, research, team leadership and commercial activity. It should fix scope, reporting line and first-year measures. Spencer Stuart put average CMO tenure at 4.1 years and found that 31% of Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500) companies had no CMO.

4.1 years

What does a CMO do?

A chief marketing officer (CMO) runs marketing for the whole company and answers to the CEO and board for the growth it produces. The federal O*NET profile for marketing managers, the closest occupation, starts with determining the demand for products and services a firm and its competitors offer, and identifying potential customers.

O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, 11-2021.00 Marketing Managers (O*NET OnLine)

The short version of the job, drawn from the O*NET task list for marketing managers:

Core duty O*NET task it rests on What it means at CMO level (our reading)
Set strategy Identify, develop, or evaluate marketing strategy One plan the CEO and board sign off on
Forecast and plan Use sales forecasting or strategic planning Revenue targets shared with sales
Own the money Evaluate the financial aspects, including budgets and return on investment Defending the marketing budget to the CFO
Run research Initiate market research studies Customer insight that shapes product decisions
Lead the team Direct the hiring, training, or performance evaluations of marketing or sales staff Org design and succession
Direct commercial activity Direct sales, marketing, or customer service activities Accountability that can extend past marketing

The budget a CMO owns is the marketing budget. For how companies size it, see our marketing budget as a percent of revenue benchmark. Reporting lines are covered in the section on who the CMO reports to.

Title variants

The top marketing role does not always carry the CMO title. Spencer Stuart's 2026 study of S&P 500 (Standard & Poor's 500) companies found that roughly a third (31%) do not have a chief marketing officer. Where the role has widened, the title changes with it:

Pay and working conditions

The pay figure here describes marketing managers, a broader occupation than CMO, and should not be read as CMO pay. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) put the median annual wage for marketing managers at $166,790 in May 2025. BLS projects employment of advertising, promotions and marketing managers to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035.

Bureau of Labor Statistics, Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Managers, 27 August 2026

Among O*NET marketing-manager respondents, 84% reported a typical work week of more than 40 hours and 88% reported a lot of freedom to set their own tasks, priorities and goals.

O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, 11-2021.00 Marketing Managers (O*NET OnLine)

To turn these duties into a posting, use the job description template section of this piece. It is written to be copied.

What are the responsibilities of a chief marketing officer?

The federal task list for marketing managers is the closest public baseline for a CMO job description. Beyond the planning, pricing, finance and hiring tasks covered above, O*NET lists duties to "Initiate market research studies, or analyze their findings" and to "Consult with product development personnel on product specifications, such as design, color, or packaging." It also lists the duty to "Direct sales, marketing, or customer service activities."

O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, 11-2021.00 Marketing Managers (O*NET OnLine)

The share of senior marketers who feel ready to drive growth falls from 70% for revenue to 32% for market share and 20% for gross margin.

A university summary of the role adds a cross-functional duty, "Working with leaders in other departments to determine and meet customer needs," (Freeman News).

Where the duties sit against Deloitte's four roles

Deloitte groups CMO work into four roles: Growth Driver, Innovation Catalyst, Brand Storyteller and Capability Builder. Its research shows the distance between the roles on paper and the work CMOs do. Only 6% of CMOs said they were actively working on growing revenue across the business. Two-thirds aspire to lead corporate strategy, and 8% operate in that capacity today.

Duty Deloitte role (our mapping) What Deloitte measured
Forecasting, pricing, financial evaluation Growth Driver 6% work on revenue across the business
Strategy, cross-department planning Growth Driver 8% operate as corporate strategy leaders
Product consultation, market research Innovation Catalyst 18% see product portfolio knowledge as a growth lever
Brand consistency, campaigns Brand Storyteller More than 40% work on brand-shaping and campaign execution
Hiring, technology, team capability Capability Builder 34% apply capabilities to campaign platforms, 10% to lifecycle or customer experience platforms

The Deloitte growth figures point the same way. In its survey, 70% of senior marketers feel most confident driving growth through revenue, 32% feel prepared to impact market share and 20% feel prepared to drive gross margin.

A worked check on your own job description

Use this audit before the description goes to the CEO or the board.

  1. List every duty in the draft.
  2. Tag each one with a Deloitte role.
  3. Count how many describe campaign execution.

Take, as an example and not a benchmark, a draft with 10 duties where 5 describe campaign execution: half the document (5 of 10) describes work Deloitte found CMOs already spend their time on. In our reading, a description weighted that way will reproduce the gap in the table rather than close it.

The fix is in the wording. Rewrite at least one duty to name a business outcome that sits outside marketing's own budget, such as market share or gross margin, and name the executive peer who shares it. The CMO, CEO and CFO alignment guide covers how to agree that outcome before the role is posted.

The scope of the top marketing job has widened

The detail shows where they land. Spencer Stuart tracked 218 CMO exits between 2021 and 2025. Of those, 9% advanced to a CEO role and 13% became a divisional CEO/president or COO. Among those who left their organization, 77% landed at a new company within six months.

Titles moved in the same direction. In 2024, 16% of CMOs had another function named in their title, such as chief marketing and communications officer. Another 10% did not have the word marketing in the title at all, using words like commercial, growth and customer instead. The pipeline runs upward too: almost 40% of CEOs have some marketing in their background.

spencerstuart.com, 3 Tips for Aspiring CMOs, 4 June 2026

Scope also narrows in some sectors. In industrials, just 53% of companies have a CMO. In healthcare the figure is 56%, where marketing is often more of a support function focused on communications and public relations.

The four scope decisions

For a company writing the job description, this means scope is a choice the CEO makes, not a default. Four remits cause most of the arguments. The table below is our own method.

Remit Place it under the CMO when (our reading) Place it elsewhere when (our reading) Line for the job description
Product marketing Positioning and launches drive the demand plan The product is technical and the roadmap leads the story Owns positioning, messaging and launch plans
Sales development Marketing and sales share one pipeline target A revenue leader runs all quota-carrying teams Owns lead flow to an agreed handoff point
Customer experience Retention and repeat purchase are the main growth levers The work is mainly operational, such as service centers Owns customer research and lifecycle programs
Communications Brand and reputation are told as one story Regulated disclosure or crisis work sits with the CEO or legal Owns external and internal communications

Write the answer into the document. As an example, if the CMO owns 5 of 10 commercial teams, name all 5 and name the owner of the other 5, which is 10 minus 5. Blurred edges are where new CMOs lose their first year.

The title should follow the scope, not lead it. For how these choices show up on an org chart, see marketing org structures. For agreeing them with the CEO and finance chief before the search opens, see CMO, CEO and CFO alignment. Tenure context is in our CMO tenure benchmark.

Who does the CMO report to?

We think most job descriptions settle the reporting line in one sentence and move on. We think that sentence decides more than any duty listed above it: who approves the budget and how often the marketing leader faces the board.

There are four common lines. The table gives our reading of what each one tends to mean in practice.

Reports to Budget authority (our reading) Board access (our reading)
Chief executive officer (CEO) CMO proposes one enterprise marketing budget, CEO and chief financial officer (CFO) approve it Direct, often a standing agenda slot
Business unit president Marketing spend sits inside the unit's profit and loss (P&L) and competes with the unit's other costs Indirect, through the unit president
Chief commercial or revenue officer Shared pool with sales, traded against quota capacity Rare, the commercial chief presents
No enterprise CMO, regional leads Each region or unit funds its own team None at enterprise level

The last line is common. Spencer Stuart found that "some companies decentralize marketing to regions or business units, without a C-level leader overseeing it at the enterprise level." In our reading, that describes many of the S&P 500 companies without a CMO noted earlier. The commercial-chief line mirrors the broader titles covered in the previous section.

The line also shapes who gets the job. In the same study, 62% of CMOs were appointed from within and 38% are externally hired, and 27% of CMOs have previously held that role at another organization. The sample covered 346 named CMOs of S&P 500 companies as of June 30, 2025. We think a first-time CMO promoted from inside a business unit may have little board exposure, so the description should spell out how that exposure will be built.

Reporting block for the job description

Copy this into the template and fill every bracket before the role is posted:

  • Reports to: [CEO / president, business unit / chief commercial officer]
  • Dotted lines: [regional marketing heads, sales leadership, product]
  • Budget owned: [enterprise / unit] marketing budget, approved by [CEO and CFO / unit president]
  • Spend authority: approves commitments up to [amount] without further sign-off
  • Board: presents to the full board [frequency]; attends [committee] as needed
  • Planning cycle: agrees targets with [CEO / CFO] by [month]

If the role reports anywhere other than the CEO, we suggest adding one line that names when the CMO presents to the board in person. It costs nothing to write and settles an argument before the hire starts.

How is a CMO different from a VP of marketing?

The three titles overlap on paper, which is why job descriptions blur them. The working difference sits in two places: who owns the final call on money and positioning, and whether the person sits on the executive team or reports into someone who does.

Federal wage data does not split them cleanly. O*NET, the Department of Labor's occupation database, files Marketing Director among the reported job titles for its marketing managers occupation. The CMO has no separate line in the national wage table, so we use the chief executives line as the nearest executive pay reference. That is our choice of benchmark, not a classification the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) makes.

O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, 11-2021.00 Marketing Managers (O*NET OnLine)

Title Remit (our reading) Decision rights (our reading) Typical reporting line (our reading) Federal pay reference, May 2025 mean annual wage
CMO Growth strategy, brand, market choice, marketing budget Sets the budget envelope with the CEO and CFO, hires and removes the marketing leadership team CEO, with board exposure Chief executives: $269,630
VP of marketing Runs the marketing plan and the teams that deliver it Allocates within an approved budget, owns channel and program mix CMO, or CEO in companies without a CMO Marketing managers: $177,770
Marketing director One function, region or product line Owns execution and agency or vendor briefs inside a set plan VP of marketing or CMO Marketing managers: $177,770

The gap between the two BLS reference points is $91,860, from $269,630 for chief executives against $177,770 for marketing managers. Treat it as a floor for the conversation, not a pay band. The chief executives figure covers far more than marketing, and actual CMO packages carry equity and bonus that a mean wage does not capture.

How to decide which title to hire

We think the test is decision rights, not seniority. Write down the three decisions the hire must own in year one. If one of them is the size of the marketing budget or a change in which markets the company serves, the role is a CMO and should report to the CEO. If all three sit inside a budget and strategy someone else has set, it is a VP or director role, and giving it a CMO title creates a mismatch the board will notice at the first planning cycle.

The fractional option

A fractional CMO holds the strategy and budget decisions part time while a VP or director runs execution. As an example, not a benchmark, an engagement of 5 days a month for 10 months adds up to 50 days of senior time. In our reading this suits companies at the lower end of the revenue range that need an executive owner of the plan before they can justify a full-time seat. Our guide to fractional CMOs covers scoping and contract terms.

What qualifications does a CMO need?

A CMO qualification list has two layers. The first is the formal floor that hiring teams screen for. The second is the set of capabilities boards now ask about in interviews. Keep them separate in the job description, because a candidate can clear the first and still miss the second.

The formal baseline

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not publish a separate entry path for chief marketing officers. For the occupation it groups as advertising, promotions and marketing managers, it says these managers typically need a bachelor's degree and work experience in a related occupation. The subject of that degree is open: Tulane's Freeman School notes that future CMOs can study any number of subjects at the bachelor's level.

That floor is wide on purpose. It tells you little about who will run the function well.

The capabilities that separate candidates

Spencer Stuart's guidance for aspiring CMOs names four: the role now requires leaders who lead with AI literacy, data fluency, customer-centric thinking and adaptability. The firm also reported more demand for CMOs with knowledge in AI, data use and customer-centricity, and described a need for comfort with ambiguity about role, scope and reporting.

spencerstuart.com, 3 Tips for Aspiring CMOs, 4 June 2026

In our reading, industry background is less of a gate than many job descriptions imply. Spencer Stuart's 2026 tenure study found that 43% of externally hired CMOs came from a different industry. For more on how long these hires last, see our CMO tenure benchmarks.

spencerstuart.com, 3 Tips for Aspiring CMOs, 4 June 2026

Layer What it covers How to test it (our reading)
Formal baseline Bachelor's degree, related work experience Resume screen
AI literacy Using AI in marketing strategy Ask for a program the candidate changed with AI
Data fluency Reading and acting on performance data Have them walk through a budget decision
Customer-centric thinking Starting from customer needs Ask what they cut after customer research
Adaptability Shifting scope and reporting lines Ask about a reorganization they led through

Where the Executive MBA fits

We would not list a graduate degree as mandatory. It narrows the pool without testing the four capabilities above.

Template: qualifications block

Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Senior marketing leadership experience with ownership of a budget and a team.

Assessed in interview: Applied AI literacy, fluency with performance data, a customer-first record and evidence of leading through changes in scope.

Optional: Graduate business education, including an Executive MBA.

A CMO job description template you can copy

The template below is a starting draft for the CEO, the search firm and the board. Each row names the decision the company must make before the role is posted. We show it completed for an example, not a benchmark: a $300M business-to-business (B2B) software company with a $24M marketing budget and a team of 40.

Field Decision the company must make Worked example (our illustration)
Purpose of the role Growth owner with a revenue number, or brand and communications lead Owns the plan for new and expansion revenue, and the brand that supports it
Reporting line CEO, or a president or chief operating officer (COO) Reports to the CEO and presents at each board meeting
Scope choices Which of product marketing, pricing, customer experience, sales development and communications sit inside Product marketing, demand generation, brand, communications and marketing operations. Pricing stays with finance and product, and marketing gives input
Budget authority Spend the CMO can move without CEO sign-off, and who owns martech Owns the $24M budget, which is 8% of the $300M in revenue. Can move up to 10% between programs during the year
Team Size, direct reports, hiring authority 40 people and 5 direct reports, with hiring authority up to director level
First-year measures Three to five measures agreed with the CEO and chief financial officer (CFO) Marketing-sourced pipeline, win rate in target segments, aided awareness in target accounts, and an incrementality read on the largest programs
Qualifications Must-have versus nice-to-have Has run a B2B budget and team of similar size, has presented to a board, and has shared a pipeline number with sales

How to settle the marked decisions

Write the purpose line last. Settle scope and measures first, then write a purpose sentence that matches them. Deloitte's research shows how often the two drift apart. It found that two-thirds of CMOs aspire to lead corporate strategy, yet only 8% operate in that capacity. If strategy is part of the job, say so in the purpose line and give the CMO a seat in the planning cycle.

Decide pricing in writing. The federal occupational profile for marketing managers lists the task to "Develop pricing strategies, balancing firm objectives and customer satisfaction." We think many software companies keep pricing with finance or product. The template forces a choice, so neither side assumes it.

O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, 11-2021.00 Marketing Managers (O*NET OnLine)

Tie first-year measures to revenue language. In a Deloitte survey of senior marketing executives, 95% said revenue is the top measure of growth in their organization. We think the measures row should start there and add one brand measure and one efficiency measure. Agree on definitions with the CFO before the offer letter goes out.

Check the budget and team rows against peers before you publish. Compare them with marketing budget as a percent of revenue and marketing headcount benchmarks. Then carry the agreed measures into the annual marketing plan template.

How should a CMO's performance be measured?

Spencer Stuart puts the average S&P 500 CMO tenure at 4.1 years, against 5.0 years for all C-suite roles. Deloitte found that half of interviewees named an enterprisewide mindset as a top success factor, yet only 6% of CMOs described themselves as actively working on growing revenue across all global business activities. In our reading, a short tenure and that gap together argue for first-year measures tied to company revenue, not campaign output.

First-year measures

Checkpoint What to measure What the board sees (our reading)
90 days Baseline marketing-sourced pipeline, with one definition agreed with sales and finance A signed one-page definition and the starting figure
6 months First incrementality test, read out Test design, measured lift, and the spend decision it changed
12 months Brand tracking against the baseline, plus pipeline trend Awareness and consideration movement next to quarterly pipeline

A worked example, not a benchmark: if holdout regions produce 5 qualified opportunities a week and comparable exposed regions produce 10, the campaign adds 5 a week, and that is the figure to price against spend. The marketing scorecard template holds all three checkpoints on one page. The first 90 days playbook covers the baseline work.

Eight interview questions tied to the template

  1. Which revenue line would you own outright in year one, and which would you share?
  2. How would you define marketing-sourced pipeline with our head of sales?
  3. Describe an incrementality test you designed and the budget it moved.
  4. What would you track in brand health, and how often would the board see it?
  5. Given the reporting line in this description, what decisions need the CEO?
  6. Which parts of the scope would you hand to a deputy, and which would you keep?
  7. How would you rebuild the budget if revenue came in short by a quarter?
  8. What would you stop doing in the first six months?

Finalizing the description

  1. Confirm the reporting line and the revenue the role owns, in writing, with the CEO.
  2. Have the chief financial officer (CFO) sign off on the pipeline definition before the search opens.
  3. Write the 90-day, 6-month and 12-month measures into the description itself.
  4. Score every candidate on the same eight questions.
  5. Review the scorecard with the board at 12 months, then reset targets for year two.

What this page does not cover

This page does not give pay bands for CMO packages, which carry equity and bonus that federal mean wage figures do not capture. It also leaves budget, headcount and tenure benchmarks by industry, and fractional CMO contract terms, to our linked guides. It is not legal advice on employment contracts or offer letters.

Questions

What does a CMO do day to day?

A CMO sets marketing strategy, forecasts and plans revenue with sales, owns the marketing budget and its return on investment, runs market research and leads the team. The federal O*NET profile for marketing managers, the closest occupation, also lists consulting on product specifications and directing sales, marketing or customer service activities. Among O*NET marketing-manager respondents, 84% reported a typical work week of more than 40 hours.

Who does the chief marketing officer report to?

The four common lines are the CEO, a business unit president, a chief commercial or revenue officer, or no enterprise CMO at all, with regional leads instead. Reporting to the CEO usually means the CMO proposes one enterprise budget for the CEO and chief financial officer (CFO) to approve, with direct board access. Spencer Stuart found that some companies decentralize marketing to regions or business units without a C-level leader at the enterprise level.

What is the difference between a CMO and a VP of marketing?

The difference is decision rights. A CMO sets the budget envelope with the CEO and CFO and hires the marketing leadership team. A vice president (VP) of marketing allocates within an approved budget and usually reports to the CMO. If one of the three decisions the hire must own in year one is the size of the marketing budget or which markets the company serves, the role is a CMO.

What qualifications do you need to be a CMO?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says marketing managers typically need a bachelor's degree and work experience in a related occupation, and the degree subject is open. Spencer Stuart names AI literacy, data fluency, customer-centric thinking and adaptability as the capabilities the role now requires. An MBA is one route, not a requirement, and 43% of externally hired CMOs came from a different industry.

How long do CMOs stay in the job?

Spencer Stuart put average S&P 500 CMO tenure at 4.1 years, against 5.0 years for all C-suite roles. Of 218 CMO exits it tracked between 2021 and 2025, 9% advanced to a CEO role and 13% became a divisional CEO, president or chief operating officer (COO). Among those who left their organization, 77% landed at a new company within six months.

How do you measure a CMO's performance?

Tie first-year measures to company revenue, not campaign output. In a Deloitte survey, 95% of senior marketing executives said revenue is the top measure of growth in their organization. A workable set is a marketing-sourced pipeline baseline agreed with sales and finance at 90 days, a first incrementality test at six months, and brand tracking against the baseline plus pipeline trend at 12 months.
