Marketing budget explorer: your revenue against the 2026 benchmarks
Type your annual revenue and choose a published benchmark. The explorer multiplies the two to give a marketing budget, then splits that budget the way Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey reports the average marketing organization spending it: labor, martech and paid media, with the AI share shown across those lines. Every share is cited below with its publisher and date.

How it is worked out
marketing budget = annual revenue × share of revenue
budget line = marketing budget × the line's share of the budget- annual revenue
- your company's revenue for the year, the denominator both surveys use
- share of revenue
- the benchmark you chose, a mean across that survey's respondents
- line's share
- Gartner's 2026 mean share of the marketing budget for labor, martech or paid media
Worked example, with the default inputs:
- $200M × 7.8% = $15.6M marketing budget.
- Labor: $15.6M × 24.5% = $3.82M. Martech: × 19.4% = $3.03M. Paid media: × 31.4% = $4.9M.
- Everything else: 100% − 24.5% − 19.4% − 31.4% = 24.7%, or $3.85M.
- AI initiatives: $15.6M × 15.3% = $2.39M, inside the lines above.

What each benchmark measures
Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey put the average marketing budget at 7.8% of company revenue, up from 7.7% in 2025. Its 401 respondents were CMOs and other marketing leaders in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, and the vast majority reported annual revenue above $1 billion.
The same survey separates organizations by AI readiness. Those reporting mature AI readiness averaged 8.9% of revenue, and Chief Marketer, reporting from the Gartner report, put the top 9% with fully optimized AI at 11%.
The CMO Survey, run by Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, polled 308 marketing leaders at for-profit U.S. companies of all sizes in January 2026 and reported budgets at 9.0% of company revenues. It also reports 9.6% of overall company budgets; that is a different denominator, so the explorer leaves it out.
How the split works
The second step applies Gartner's 2026 mean shares of the marketing budget to the budget you just computed: labor at 24.5%, martech at 19.4% and paid media at 31.4%. The 24.7% those three leave is shown as everything else, because the sources cited here do not break it out. In our reading, agency fees sit in that remainder: Gartner reports agencies apart from paid media, saying the shift toward paid media was funded by cuts to agencies.
AI is not a fourth line. Gartner reports that CMOs allocate 15.3% of marketing budgets to AI initiatives. In our reading that money is spent through labor, martech and media rather than beside them, so the explorer shows it alongside the split and never adds it to the total.
How to read the result
Each benchmark is an average across respondents, so a few heavy spenders can pull it up, and none of them is a target. In our reading the explorer answers one question: what your budget would be if you spent like the average company in that sample. Pick the sample that looks most like your company before you put the figure in front of a CEO or a board, and quote it with its publisher, year, sample and denominator.
Applying several averages to one budget gives a profile, not a plan. Your own split depends on how much of the work you keep in-house, how much of your pipeline comes from paid channels and how your finance team books salaries and software.
