Marketing mix modeling

Marketing mix modeling (MMM) is a statistical method that estimates how much each marketing channel, and each outside factor such as pricing or seasonality, contributed to sales or another business result. It works from aggregated totals over time, not from tracking individual people. Marketing leaders use it to decide how to split next year's budget across channels.

How it is measured

MMM breaks a sales figure into parts. In plain text: sales = baseline demand + contribution of each marketing channel + effect of non-marketing factors.

The model estimates each term from history. Planners then compare contribution per dollar across channels and move budget toward the channels that return more. According to the Meridian project documentation, MMM "uses aggregated data to measure impact across marketing channels and account for non-marketing factors that impact sales and other key performance indicators (KPIs)."

Because it relies on totals, the same source notes that MMM "is privacy-safe and does not use any cookie or user-level information" (Meridian). This is the practical difference from click-based attribution. It still works when cookies and device identifiers drop out.

Common mistakes

  • Treating MMM output as user-level attribution. It explains aggregate movement, not which ad a given customer saw.
  • Leaving out non-marketing drivers. If price changes, promotions or seasonality are missing, the model credits their effect to media.
  • Running it once. Channel effects shift, so the model needs refreshing on a set schedule.
  • Reading contribution per dollar at today's spend as if it holds at double the spend. Returns usually flatten as a channel gets larger.

When it matters to you

MMM matters most when the board asks why marketing spend is set where it is. A defensible split by channel holds up better than platform-reported results. Pair the model's output with your budget as a share of revenue and bring both into the board deck.
